Application Process
Surface Preparation
- Cleaning: Begin with removing all the dirt, oil, and debris for a clean surface.
- Degreasing: Start applying a degreaser to any greasy area or oil stain, then scrub and rinse it with water.
- Etching: Use a concrete etcher to open up the concrete pores. After this, you must rinse the floor thoroughly and let it dry.
- Grinding Or Shot Blasting: Mechanical grinding or shot blasting is necessary to achieve a smooth finish on heavily stained or uneven surfaces.
- Repair the Cracks and Holes: Fill the holes with epoxy crack filler and let them repair the cracks.
Moisture Testing
- After Preparing the surface, you must conduct a moisture test to ensure that the concrete is dry before applying epoxy, as excess moisture can hinder the application process.
Priming The Surface
- You must apply the primer to the prepared concrete surface as it will help the epoxy coating bond better with the concrete, then let it dry for at least six to eight hours.
Mixing The Epoxy
- Proper Mixing: Carefully mix the epoxy resin with the hardener using the drill with a mixing attachment for a consistent blend.
- Pot Life: While mixing, you must be aware of the pot life, i.e., the working time of the mixed epoxy. So, only mix the amount that you can apply within this working time frame.
Apply The Epoxy Base Coat
- Pour and spread: you can pour the mixed epoxy onto the floor in small sections and then use a notched squeegee to spread it evenly.
- Rolling: Using a roller with a 3/8-inch nap to back roll the epoxy can help achieve an even surface by removing the air bubbles.
- Curing: Allow the base coat to cure for at least 12-24 hours.
Applying The Topcoat
- Mix the epoxy topcoat and apply it using a roller or a squeegee for a glossy finish. Depending on the environmental conditions, let it rest for at least 72 hours.
Final Inspection
- Lastly, check the finished concrete floor for any missed spots, bubbles, or other imperfections, based on which you can perform touch-ups if needed.
